How to factory reset a Cisco ATA186 and configuration tips

Cisco ATA186 is very simple and useful device for helping analog phone to connect VoIP system. Cisco ATA186 was end of sale and support by Cisco systems for a long time ago. However still the box is very popular due to esay to configure and cost effiecive. It just works! with simple Cisco IOS gatway configuration that will show in this article. Not like ATA187 and ATA190, ATA186 is not required phone registration process. Which means license is not required.

Let’s start reset the box first. 

 

1. Access ATA186

– You don’t have to factory reset as long as you could access the ATA186, how?

a) Power on ATA186.
b) Connect analog phone to line#1 of ATA186.
c) Push reset button and dial "21"+"#" to listen current IP address of the box.
d) Setup IP on your PC with same network of ATA186 and direct connect by Ethernet cable.
e) Access ATA186 and change IP, netmask, gateway info and etc.

 

2. Factory reset

– Well, above steps are not working, follow below procedure to reset.

a) Connect analog phone to line#1 of ATA186.
b) Make sure no Ethernet port is plugged either switch or PC.
c) Power on ATA186.
d) Take the phone off hook.
e) The red button on the top of the ATA186 will be blinking.
f) Press the red button on the ATA186 and dial "322873738"+"#"+"*". (The numbers 322873738 = FACTRESET)
g) Hang up the phone.
h) DHCP is default
i) Connect ATA196 to the network to get IP address from DHCP server.
j) Check DHCP server to see what IP has been assigned and open a browser to access.
k) You could try above "c)" pushing reset button and dial "21"+"#" to listen current IP address of the box.
