I was looking for virtual machine backup solution for home lab. As always, few requirement for the solutions; free and simple. vSphere Data Protection(VDP) was out of option until now. B/C of the cost.
However, with limited backup size, VDP can be used for free. Not sure, VDPA which is vSphere Data Protection Advanced has same deal.
Here is the steps to install.
Requirements
– vCenter (installed Windows Server)
– DNS resolution.
– Dedicated VDP user account on vCenter
1. Download *.OVA
– Go to www.vmware.com website and search keyword “vdp 5.1”
– Download “VMware vSphere Data Protection – 0.5TB Backup Data Store” Aboutn 3.2G.
2. Install
– Open vSphere5.5(vCenter) or vCenter Web Client
– From menu /File/Deploy OVF Template”
– Select a source location, now click “Next”
– Validate the details and click “Next”
– Click “Accept” the EULA and click “Next”
– Provide “Name of the virtual machine, VDP”
– Choose install location “Datastore”
– Provide Network information, IP.
– Click “Finish”
3. vSphere Data Protection Configuration Utility
– Open a browser and type
https://:8543/vdp-configure
– Login
username : root
password : changeme
3-1. Network Settings
– Provide IP information which is already entered.
– Host name : ex) VDP
– Domain : ex) ipbalance-lab.local
3-2. Time Zone
– Choose time zone
3-3. VDP password
– Put a new password for VDP Appliance.
3-4. vCenter registration
– When I put a vCenter login, I got below error.
– You need to create a dedicated VDP user account from Windows server where is vCenter server installed. ex) VDP.adm
3-4-1. Create a dedicated VDP user on vCenter server.
3-4-2. User account configuration on vCenter
– From vSphere5.5(vCenter) or vCenter Web Client or , /Hosts and Clusters.
– From a VM host, click “permissions” tap.
– Right mouse button click from the tap, and click “Add permission”
– From “Assign Permissions” window, click “Add”
– Select VDP user. ex) VDP.adm and click “Add” button and click “OK”.
– Select Administrator from “Assigned Role” (right side of box)
– Click “OK”
– To verify configuration of VDP user account.
– Go to Home > Administrator > Role Manager, click the “Administrator role” VDP.adm should be listed to the right of the role.
– Reboot VDP Appliance.
3-5. Connect & setting
– VDP Appliance – If you see the “Not Connected” status, click “Connect”.
