Don’t know what happened. We had an error (below) in duing installation of opensource monitoring tool called Observium and it is how to address it.
[root@Observium-CentOS /]# mysql -u root -p
ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user ‘root’@’localhost’ (using password: YES)
Many different solution was tried, but this was the only steps to make it work.
[root@CentOS /]# /etc/init.d/mysqld stop
Stopping mysqld: [ OK ]
[root@CentOS /]# mysqld_safe –skip-grant-tables &
[1] 6724
[root@CentOS /]# 140304 09:03:54 mysqld_safe Logging to ‘/var/ log/mysqld.log’.
140304 09:03:54 mysqld_safe Starting mysqld daemon with databases from / var/lib/mysql
[root@CentOS /]# mysql -u root
Welcome to the MySQL monitor. Commands end with ; or \g.

You can turn off this feature to get a quicker startup with -A

mysql> update user set password=PASSWORD("new_pwd") where User=’root’;

mysql> flush privileges;
Query OK, 0 rows affected (0.00 sec)
mysql> quit

[root@Observium-CentOS /]# /etc/init.d/mysqld stop
